A phone technician caught with over €2,000 of cocaine and cannabis planned to take the drugs to induce a heart attack, a court has heard.

Sean McDomhnail (29) was found with the drugs after gardaí stopped a car in north Co Dublin. Judge Stephanie Coggans ordered a probation report and adjourned sentencing to a date in December.

The defendant, of Rusheen Lane, Caltragh, Co Sligo, admitted possession of cannabis, worth €864, and cocaine, valued at €1,292, at Hamlet Lane in Balbriggan on December 2, 2024.

Garda Eoin O’Connor told Swords District Court that gardaí stopped and searched a car. When gardaí went to search McDomhnail, a bag fell from his trousers, and three more bags of drugs were found during a search in a garda station.

A charge of possession of the cocaine and cannabis for sale or supply was dismissed, after the judge accepted McDomhnail had the drugs for his own use.

McDomhnail denied he was supplying the drugs, saying he was suffering with his mental health at the time, and he planned to use the drugs to “bring on a heart attack”.

He had since sought medical help, his lawyer said, and was fully committed to his rehabilitation.
